Cavaliers To Waive And Stretch J.R. Smith's $4.3M Deal

A reunion with former teammate LeBron James does not seem to be on the horizon.

Smith, 33, played in only 11 games last season, agreeing to leave the team in November to await a trade or release.

According to multiple outlets, Cleveland will stretch the remaining $4.3 million it owes Smith over the next three years in an effort to lessen his salary cap hit.

Multiple outlets reported Monday that Smith would be waived by the team before his contract for the 2019-20 season became guaranteed.

The Cavaliers are dribbling out the final seconds of JR Smith's time with the team.

Smith will become an unrestricted free agent when he clears waivers Wednesday.

Smith, who turns 34 before the season, was a member of the Cavs' run of four straight trips to the Finals, but fell out of favor with the front office and coaching staff last season.
