Steve Bruce 'quits Sheffield Wednesday' amid Newcastle United speculation

Newcastle fans have been reacting on social media after Steve Bruce resigned from his role at Sheffield Wednesday.

Bruce has given his notice in writing together with first-team coaches Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence, according to the PA, leaving them without a manager ahead of Tuesday's match at the PTS.

Bruce was appointed by the Owls in January, but did not start the job until February.

Bolasie actually ended up at Villa for a temporary spell last season, although it was when Bruce had already been sacked so the two are yet to work together, while McCarthy suffered a broken leg around the time he was targeted by the soon to be Magpies boss.

The former Birmingham and Sunderland manager told BBC Radio Sheffield on Sunday: "Speculation is speculation". Bruce ended the season strongly with Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship, whilst Genesio left Lyon after finishing 3rd in Ligue 1.

He also mentions bringing a buyer to Lee Charnley who was willing to buy the club, but he couldn't get a mandate from him to actually offload it.

He rejected Newcastle as a manager, turned them down twice before this, the last of which when he refused to stab Robson in the back, offered it when his friend was still in the dugout.

Steve Bruce has been widely tipped to become the new Newcastle United manager.
