Social media firms under fire over violent content after murder suspect’s posts

Oneida County Dispatch received numerous calls around 7:20 a.m. ET on Sunday about a man who had posted on social media that he had killed his girlfriend and was trying to harm himself, Curley said.

Officers who tracked the call found Clark stabbing himself in the neck, causing injuries that required hospital treatment.

Hundreds of people gathered for a vigil Monday to remember 17-year-old homicide victim Bianca Devins.

There was confusion in initial reports of the alleged murder, with some reports suggesting the teen's death was the result of an online obsession and stalking incident. Police confirmed that the social media photos were authentic and they have requested that they are removed.

Afterwards, he took a cellphone photo of himself lying across Devins' dead body - which cops found under a green tarp near his SUV, police said. "They'll drop anything to delete a post of a mother breastfeeding her child in a maternity shoot, but they'll turn [their] heads to a minor's dead body".

Lt. Bryan Coromato says police are investigating the case as a murder and attempted suicide.

Clark is reportedly being treated for his injuries and expected to survive. He was then later charged with second-degree murder of Devins.

The horrific killing of the teenager in Utica, New York, has drawn headlines, its brutality underscored by its broadcast.

In a statement posted on the Utica Police Department's Facebook page, Devins' family described her as "a talented artist, a loving sister, daughter, and cousin, and a wonderful young girl". In the chat group, when one user asked "bia" who was coming to the concert with her, user "bia" responded, "My friende [sic] brandon he drives". She was planning to attend Mohawk valley Community college this fall.

Bianca grew a following from sharing details about her life. "She always tried to make people feel good, feel loved, helped them when they were down even if she was going through her own shit". She was found dead Sunday morning alongside a road in Utica, but confirmed to WKTV in Utica.

"I learned about her murder when the attacker posted it to her Discord server", Chels told the Daily Dot via Twitter messages. "At this point, that call along with what occurred is still under investigation so we have nothing further to release at this point on that".

A mutual friend told Rolling Stone that their relationship was "strictly platonic".

Then, in an attempt to drown out this spread of the images of Ms Devins's body with her throat cut, other Instagram users started posting photographs of her alive as well as pictures of flowers and animals, using her name as the hashtag. Before his account was taken down, photos of Devins' body were still on Clark's Instagram account, but were covered with a sensitive content filter thanks to multiple people reporting the image as disturbing or graphic content. Some users are expressing griefs while others are criticizing those that shared images of Bianca as well as the media's coverage of her death.

Clark took photos and posted them to the social media site, "Discord".

"You can't really take down this type of stuff", someone replied. "I hate knowing you're not going to ever come back home", she wrote.
