Jeffrey Epstein considered to be 'extraordinary' flight risk as judge weighs bail

They say Epstein (66) is a flight risk and danger to the community and should remain behind bars until he is tried on charges that he recruited and abused dozens of underage girls in ny and Florida in the early 2000s.

Rossmiller also said one of the seized items was a passport that appeared to have been issued by a foreign country in the 1980s that containing Epstein's photo, but someone else's name.

Epstein, who has pleaded not guilty, has asked to be allowed to live under house arrest with armed guard at his expense in his mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side, which is valued at $77 million.

Last week, prosecutors said in a court filing that Epstein made payments to potential witnesses a year ago in an apparent effort to influence them.

Two women who said they were sexually abused by Epstein also spoke at the hearing, urging Judge Richard M. Berman to deny him bail.

In the bail memorandum, prosecutors said a search of his NY residence uncovered "an extraordinary volume of photographs of nude and partially nude young women or girls", some of which "appear to be of underage girls". If convicted, he faces up to 45 years in jail.

Epstein was charged last week in NY with one count of sex trafficking of minors and one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors.

While much of the early legal sparring has focused on questions of Epstein's freedom, a secondary struggle may determine how much money Epstein has - and what he will owe and to whom when it's all over.

As KOB 4 previously reported, New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas has spoken to alleged victims of Epstein in New Mexico.

Epstein, 66, is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, a fortress-like jail that has been criticized by inmates and lawyers for harsh conditions.

Indonesia's meteorology agency (BMKG) recorded the quake at magnitude 7.2 and said it was not in danger of causing a tsunami . It had occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers with its epicenter located inland, North of Ternate city.

At a hearing in Manhattan federal court on Monday, Epstein's legal team said their client is willing to pay for security and a global monitoring system to ensure he doesn't flee.

It's unclear if the summary includes the "piles of cash" and "dozens of diamonds" that prosecutors said Monday they found in Epstein's safe.

Few details about Epstein's wealth are known.

Under his earlier Florida agreement, Epstein served 13 months in a county jail, but was allowed to go to his office during the day.

Prosecutors have said Epstein is trying to bribe potential witnesses to keep quiet about his crimes.

Prosecutors said a search of Epstein's home uncovered nude images of underage girls, and they accused him of paying two potential witnesses against him previous year in an apparent effort to influence them.

"This course of action, and in particular its timing, suggests the defendant was attempting to further influence co-conspirators who might provide information against him in light of the recently re-emerging allegations", prosecutors said.

The decade-old secret plea deal led to Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta's resignation last week.

Epstein had demonstrated that he "disciplined himself", Weinberg said, by not engaging in any crimes since the Florida deal, in which he agreed to submit himself to sex offender registration procedures in multiple states.
