German political parties remain divided over von der Leyen's European Union candidacy

German political parties remain divided over von der Leyen's European Union candidacy

The 60-year-old conservative needs to secure a majority in the Strasbourg-based assembly at Tuesday's secret ballot to replace Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the European Commission.

Mr Kelly said he believes Ms Von der Leyen has shown she's a "woman of great talent competence, perspective, calmness and well-equipped to do the job of Commission President".

She reiterated her support for Theresa May's Withdrawal Agreement, but added, to jeers from the Brexit Party MEPs: "I stand ready for a further extension of the withdrawal date should more time be required for a good reason".

In policies created to win-over the socialists, she pledged to establish an EU-wide minimum wage, a fund to prop-up national welfare systems in the case of an economic crisis and ensure flexibility in the tax and spend restraints on eurozone countries.

"Those are positive commitments that justify our the vote tomorrow", socialist Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa said on Twitter.

"We are going to have to fight, we are going to have to rise up for this Europe of ours, the whole world is called upon with disruptive elements apace" she said, noting that the some countries are turning towards authoritarian regimes and protectionism.

The far-left and the Greens have already said they will not support her.

Von der Leyen also received complete support from German Parliament who agreed to her plans, including operations against ISIS, areal and navy missions, technical help and investigative missions in the Mediterranean Sea.

Germany's defence minister had been nominated by the leaders after 50 hours of arduous negotiations despite not being a spitzenkandidat, or lead candidate, who campaigned before May's European elections to head the EU's executive branch.

"Regardless of the outcome, I will resign as defense minister on Wednesday", the German defense minister wrote on Twitter on Monday.

11-year-old girl claims her iPhone 6 exploded
The entry-level iPhones include the iPhone SE, the iPhone 6, and the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models. The iPhone 6 then caught fire and burnt holes in the blanket upon which it fell.

She was once dubbed "the soloist" for her go-it-alone style, and a recent poll by Bild am Sonntag newspaper rated her as the second-least popular member of Merkel's cabinet.

In the letter, von der Leyen also made pledges about climate change, a pan-European minimum wage, and gender quotas for corporate boards, among other things.

It is unclear if she now holds enough support to be elected as parliament's Greens have announced they will not back her as she has failed to show enough ambition in tackling climate change, which could potentially cost her up to 74 votes.

She needs 374 votes in the 747-seat chamber to win. "This could have a lasting impact over the commission's five-year mandate on climate and environmental issues", she said. "I will ensure that we use our full and comprehensive toolbox at European level", she said. "There are no votes there for anything different".

Who is Ursula von der Leyen?

Von der Leyen said on Monday that she would support giving the United Kingdom more time to negotiate its exit from the European Union.

The liberal group Renew Europe and the Socialists and Democrats Group had earlier announced support for the 60-year-old, who this week resigned as German defense minister, regardless of the European Union lawmakers' decision.

In her speech the president also announced that she would be prepared to extend Brexit, promoting heckles from the Brexit Party. Throughout much of the 1990s she took a break from her career to be a stay-at-home mum to care for the couple's seven children.

At the same time, the pan-European political groups that came together after the vote are frustrated by the way von der Leyen's candidacy was foisted on them.
