Amazon Workers Protest Conditions Amid Prime Day

Other retailers are offering big sales in conjunction with Prime Day.

If you're anxious how this will affect your order if you buy one of the Amazon Prime deals, Amazon said they will not be impacted.

The report added that while the Minnesota protest represents the first Amazon Prime Day strike in the United States, employees in Europe have staged the same protests on Prime Day in the past.

USA media disclosed some emails a year ago showing that Amazon pitched its facial-recognition system, Rekognition, to ICE officials to facilitate the agency to target and identify immigrants during homeland security investigations.

Amazon "Prime Day" is a worldwide two-day sale for hundreds of products on the company's website, which - among other perks - offers free shipping for online orders for customers who are part of the "Amazon Prime" membership program. Walmart has a "summer savings event" through Wednesday.

Some people may have delayed purchases until Prime Day, or are making back-to-school shopping purchases ahead of that season.

Amazon said late last night that roughly 15 workers participated in the event outside of the Shakopee fulfillment center.

In Shakopee, southwest of downtown Minneapolis, residents will gather at the Amazon warehouse to protest Amazon's ICE connections and to show solidarity with the workers on strike. "If these groups - unions and the politicians they rally to their cause - really want to help the American worker, we encourage them to focus their energy on passing legislation for an increase in the federal minimum wage, because $7.25 is too low".

Massachusetts Sen Elizabeth Warren and Vermont Sen Bernie Sanders, both 2020 presidential hopefuls, voiced their support for workers on Twitter.

In addition, protesters reportedly planned to deliver to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' home in Manhattan petitions calling on Amazon Web Services to no longer host databases that let the Department of Homeland Security track and take into custody immigrants.

"We provide great employment opportunities with excellent pay - ranging from $16.25-$20.80 an hour, and comprehensive benefits including health care, up to 20 weeks parental leave, paid education, promotional opportunities, and more", spokeswoman Brenda Alfred said. Best Buy, EBay, Target and other retailers are also offering discounts.
