PM Imran blames 'Pakistani mafia' for pressurising state institutions, judiciary

Accountability court judge Arshad Malik has claimed that he was offered a Rs500 million cash bribe by the son of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Hussain Nawaz, who demanded that the judicial officer resign on the grounds that he "could no longer deal with the guilt of having convicted" the ex-premier under duress.

A senior Pakistani judge was sacked on Friday following a scandal over blackmail claims relating to the jailing of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on corruption charges, the law ministry said.

Prime Minister Imran Khan tweeted on Saturday saying the Pakistani mafia uses different tricks to blackmail, threats and pressurize the judiciary and other institutions just like the "Sicilian mafia".

In the letter, judge Malik claimed he was offered Rs 500 million bribe by former premier Nawaz Sharif's son Hussain Nawaz along with his entire family settlement overseas if he resigned on the grounds that he could no longer deal with the guilt of convicting Nawaz without evidence.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) in a statement, said, the law ministry would decide if an inquiry against the judge would be conducted by the ministry itself or by the IHC.

The IHC has the administrative control of the accountability courts in Islamabad.

On Malik's claims that he was threatened and offered bribes, the law minister said there would be legal action against anyone who tried to intimidate or blackmail judges. Opposition leader in the National Assembly and PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif also called for the immediate release of his elder brother.

Another video showing Justice Malik purportedly dancing on the beats of an election campaign song of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party was also leaked.

He called the video "a lie [and] fake" and accused the Sharif family of threatening and offering him a bribe in exchange for acquitting the former prime minister.

"The sentence (of Sharif) can not be immediately be suspended, extended or changed in any way until the IHC takes a decision regarding whether the judgement was issued under pressure", Nasim said.

Meanwhile, Maryam tweeted, "I request the top judiciary to revoke the judgment against Nawaz Sharif and set him free without any further delay".
