Power reportedly went out early Saturday evening at much of Rockefeller Center and reached the Upper West Side.

"Unfortunately, we do not have an estimated restoration at this time", Con Edison said.

Two city officials briefed on the situation told ABC News that the outages at first appeared to be under control.

No injuries have been reported so far, according to Con Ed, and the Police and Fire Departments.

Con Ed said a transformer fire in Midtown, at West 64th Street and West End Avenue, likely triggered the blackout that stretched from the West 40s to 72nd Street, and from 5th Avenue to the Hudson River. Radio City Music Hall's facade was dark as well.

Several Broadway and off-Broadway shows said they were canceling performances, according to tweets aggregated by The Broadway League. He went outside and saw traffic and street lights were out. In some places, civilians stepped in to direct traffic.

The electricity cuts come on the anniversary of a massive power failure in 1977 that plunged the NY skyline into darkness and triggered widespread looting and arson.

Saturday's outage occurred on the 42nd anniversary of a NY blackout that crippled the city during a heat wave on July 13, 1977.

He urged the culprits: "turn yourself in at the earliest opportunity, explain yourself and face the consequences". Some senior Conservative figures criticised Mr Johnson over his perceived failure to defend Sir Kim.

Video shared with CNN showed fans still in their seats in the darkened venue, clapping and cheering despite the power outage. Apparently there's a blackout in midtown Manhattan.

Memories of rioting, looting and violence during the 1977 blackout spooked some tourists visiting the city, including Dave and Dara Campbell, of Gilbert, Arizona. "I am so sorry that this happened", she said.

Firefighters said they were responding to numerous requests for help, particularly from people trapped in elevators.

"We're getting reports of power outages in station complexes throughout Manhattan", said "Thank you", the utility giant wrote on Twitter.

"This was a mechanical issue", de Blasio said from the campaign trail.

"We were stuck for about 75 minutes", said O'Malley, 57. "It's completely dark, people were coming up using their flashlights on their phones".

Many Broadway theatres lost power in the outage, causing productions to delay their Saturday evening performances and others to cancel altogether.

Broadway shows and a sold-out Jennifer Lopez concert at Madison Square Garden came to a halt Saturday night as a massive power outage left more than 61,000 Manhattan customers in the dark.
