Kyrie Irving signs with Nets

There were rumblings Irving would be headed to the Nets for some time, but the question was whether he'd get Durant or someone else to join him. I will always honor him and honor the number 35.

After the two-time NBA Finals MVP made a decision to leave the Bay for the Brooklyn Nets, the Warriors elected to orchestrate a sign-and-trade that netted them All-Star D'Angelo Russell in exchange for Durant.

The star forward announced on social media Sunday that he will switch to No. 7 after previously wearing No. 35 for the first 12 seasons of his National Basketball Association career.

"Kevin is a champion, perennial All-Star, and one of the great players of this, or any, generation", Nets general manager Sean Marks said in a statement.

While the exact reason for Durant's move to No. 7 isn't known, Chip Brown of the Dallas Morning News (Wayback Machine archive) wrote back in 2006 that Durant wore No. 35 in honor of his former AAU coach Charles Craig, who was murdered at the age of 35 several years prior. He has led the National Basketball Association in scoring four times, and his current 27 points-per-game average ranks sixth all time.

He was an All-Star for the first time last season, averaging 21.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game.

"We're excited to add a player of D'Angelo's ability to our roster", Myers said.

Durant's deal is reportedly worth $164 million over four years, according to Spotrac. He missed most of this past season's playoffs, first with a calf injury and then the Achilles rupture during the NBA Finals - a series Golden State lost to Toronto in six games.
