With the new update, you can point the camera to a sign, and the Translate app will automatically detect the language.

Afrikaans, Arabic, Hindi, Malay, Thai and Vietnamese are among the 60 additional languages supported, bringing the total number to 88, in a bid to help more people travelling overseas. "And "Import" lets you translate text from photos on your camera roll".

Previously, Google Translate's camera could only translate between English and another language, but with these changes it will work with many more combinations, allowing you to translate from 88 languages into over 100 others.

Google is also unveiling a new auto-detect feature, so you can select "Detect language" as the source language.

The new feature will be a boon to foreigners visiting Vietnam since a majority of the population does not speak English fluently.

Google Translate is a pretty handy app when you are travelling, or just on holiday overseas.

It means that any Irish phrase on a billboard, page or street sign can be instantly translated into languages as diverse as Japanese, Portugese, German and Mandarin.

A language detection option is also now available to assist people travelling in places with multiple languages, such as South America where both Portuguese and Spanish is spoken.

Neural Machine Translation is now used for the instant camera translations of Google Translate.

Google Translate is already a great tool in every traveler's app arsenal. Lastly, Google has also said that it is reducing the flickering of translated text, making it more stable and easier to read. The new look has all three camera translation features conveniently located on the bottom of the app.
