Sanllehi welcomes 'true Arsenal man' Edu as new technical director

Mariano's impressive performances in France made Madrid re-sign the player a year ago, with the forward making 19 appearances for the club last season, scoring four times.

"We have a strong squad and some very talented young players with fantastic people at every level".

"I had the opportunity to play for many years with Arsenal and win some important titles".

"It can be an unsettling period for any player and that is understandable but until a club comes up with any sort of realistic valuation of the player we don't have to do anything and we won't".

It was announced on Tuesday that the former Brazil midfielder would take on the new role at the Emirates Stadium.

However, as part of the agreement, the 18-year-old will be loaned back to St Etienne for next season.

He won the title with them in 2002 as well as being apart of the historical team to go unbeaten during the 2003/04 Premier League campaign. "I'm looking forward to helping make a difference". Arsenal's purse strings have been tightened by their failure to qualify for the Champions League for a second successive season.

Arsenal will pay for the defender in instalments, which will see the deal not to damage their restricted budget of about £45m for this summer.

Head of football Raul Sanllehi added: "We're very excited that Edu is joining the team".

With a new technical director in place, Arsenal will look to strengthen their squad by bringing in necessary reinforcements before the new season kicks off in August.

Edu will work closely with head coach Unai Emery, whom he played for at Valencia.

The Gunners lost 4-1 to London rivals Chelsea FC in the Europa League final to end Emery's first season in charge on a disappointing note.

And, according to The Mirror, Arsenal have been presented with the chance to sign Diaz this summer for just £18million.
