USA billionaire Steyer, fierce Trump foe, enters Democratic White House race

Mr. Steyer's team said his campaign will focus on fixing two major "crises" - reforming a "broken political system" and "saving our planet from the ravages of climate change".

But the pool remains crowded, with two dozen candidates. "He's brought us to the brink of nuclear war, obstructed justice at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and in direct violation of the U.S. Constitution, he's taken money from foreign governments, and threatened to shut down news organizations that report the truth", Steyer says in the ad. The 62-year-old environmentalist is one of the most visible and deep-pocketed liberals advocating for President Trump's impeachment. His launch video's montage decrying the concentration of wealth in the hands of "a few very, very rich people" did feature the president's son Donald Trump Jr. and billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who was indicted on sex trafficking charges on Monday. Its spending started with a $1 million burst in March, but has since slowed considerably, with only $50,000 in reported spending last month.

In 2018, NextGen spent $33 million in 11 states on digital ads, registering almost 260,000 voters and getting them to the polls. In a memo, NextGen linked to research estimating that 31 percent of young voters voted in the latest midterm elections, a sizable increase from 20 percent turnout during the 2018 midterms.

Tina Podlodowski, chair of the Washington State Democrats, criticized Steyer's announcement on Twitter, urging him to reconsider how he'd spend his money.

Although Steyer has not yet outlined a policy platform, he has been an ardent climate change activist, as well as a vocal opponent of Trump's, launching a $10 million national advertisement to unseat the president.

Sens. Elizabeth Warren of MA and Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who are competing for the support of liberal voters in the Democratic presidential primary, decried the influence of billionaires in the 2020 race. Elizabeth Warren, swiped at Steyer's wealth in reacting to his candidacy.

Mr. Steyer said Americans are "deeply disappointed" and hurt by the way they're treated by what the people think is the "power elite" in Washington, D.C.

Warren did not name Steyer appeared to reference his campaign announcement in a tweet Tuesday afternoon. "The strongest Democratic nominee in the general will have a coalition that's powered by a grassroots movement". What they really care about, is "just making money".
