Nintendo Switch Lite's New D-Pad Won't Be Added To Joy-Cons

"Adding Nintendo Switch Lite to the lineup gives gamers more color and price point options", said Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser. Wireless controllers can still be connected to Switch Lite. The device has integrated controls and, unlike its larger predecessor, will not support video output to TV.

The Nintendo Switch Lite will be released on the 20th of September, and will retail for $199.The announcement video was unclear if these details apply to the Singapore market, but considering that the Nintendo Switch now retails for we S$459 we're guessing local prices to be somewhere within the $250-$350 range. The Switch Lite will be available from September 20.

Nintendo claims it made a decision to go with a mobile-centric console based on the way Switch owners preferred to use their consoles on the go. However, all current Nintendo Switch games that support handheld mode can be played flawlessly on the Switch Lite. It is not compatible with a dock and can not be connected to a TV, and the love-it-or-hate-it kickstand on the back is gone. The Switch Lite can't properly play offline multiplayer in Mario Kart 8, removes the second-player Cappy in Super Mario Odyssey, takes out most of the multiplayer fun in Super Smash Bros.

Battery life The Switch Lite battery life is supposedly around 7 hours (the same as the Nintendo Switch), so it might not be incredible for long journeys, but it still should be useful for your daily commute.

It's clear that the Nintendo Switch Lite was designed with single-player gameplay in mind, though you can work around this by buying additional Joy-Cons. Some Switch games benefit from using a Joy-Con in its horizontal configuration, giving it a layout similar to traditional NES and SNES controllers.

For games that do not support handheld mode, players can wirelessly connect Joy-Con controllers to the device.
