‘Friends’ to leave Netflix for WarnerMedia’s new streaming service, HBO Max

HBO Max will include 10,000 hours of programming from across the WarnerMedia group of networks and studios, including the new DC Comics show "Batwoman", reruns of "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" and "Pretty Little Liars", documentaries from CNN, kids' programming from Cartoon Network and anime from Crunchyroll.

WarnerMedia, the media company created when AT&T Inc. acquired Time Warner, said Tuesday it will name its coming direct-to-consumer streaming service HBO Max.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, July 9, WarnerMedia announced that its upcoming streaming platform is named HBO Max, and will roll out in the spring of 2020.

WarnerMedia has officially named its streaming service, and we'll all soon be saying hello to HBO Max. "Thanks for the memories, gang", Netflix wrote. Reese Witherspoon ("Big Little Lies") and producer Greg Berlanti ("Riverdale") also have movie deals with the new streamer.

Earlier today, Netflix confirmed that the much-beloved show would be leaving their streaming platform on January 1st, 2020. According to the WSJ, these shows will remain on Netflix for several more years before they are migrated to HBO Max.

When WarnerMedia announced its plans to bring a new streaming service, there were some groans.

HBO Max will launch in 2020. TV for exclusive streaming rights to "Friends" through the end of 2019, but AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson recently said that WarnerMedia would be reclaiming popular titles that were licensed to others for its own subscription VOD service.

The most-viewed Netflix show was workplace comedy "The Office", which will switch from Netflix to a planned digital offering from Comcast Corp's NBCUniversal in 2021.

This new development raises more questions about the future of the streaming services industry.

Max will also feature more than a dozen original shows/movies.

Even before we get to the launch of HBO Max, we should note that the streaming landscape will also have seen the arrival of rival services from both Disney and Apple this fall.

Netflix had reupped its deal with Warner Bros.

Already revealed as HBO Max originals are Denis Villeneuve's Dune: The Sisterhood, a series adaptation from Frank Herbert's sci-fi universe; Station Eleven, a post-apocalyptic limited series; an animated Gremlins series based on the original 1980s classic from Amblin Entertainment and Warner Bros.
