Actor Rip Torn dies at 88

Actor Rip Torn has died aged 88.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, he helped launch the career of his cousin Sissy Spacek. Sharing a still from the Men in Black franchise, Will simply wrote, "R.I.P. Rip". He was so great in Defending Your Life.

That reputation for irascibility would follow Torn through the rest of his career, but while he never achieved Nicholson's level of fame, he remained prolific as a character actor throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

The actor also garnered an Oscar nomination for essaying the role of a drunkard father in Martin Ritt drama Cross Creek opposite Mary Steenburgen in 1984. Torn. Thank you for everything.

He was previously married to the actress Geraldine Page, with whom he had three children, and Ann Wedgeworth, with whom he also had a child. By his side at the time of his passing were his wife, Stardust Memories actress Amy Wright, and his daughters, Katie and Angelica. The actor is survived by sister Patricia, and his grandchildren Elijah, Tana, Emeris and Hannah.
