Mets' Alonso outlasts fellow rookie Vlad Jr to win HR Derby

New York's newest slugger outlasted a worn-down Vladimir Guerrero the final round of the All-Star Home Run Derby on Monday night to win $1 million - almost double his 2019 salary.

With the 29 homers, Guerrero passed Josh Hamilton, the previous holder of the record, who hit 28 home runs back in a round in 2008. Alonso was then swarmed by the NL All-Stars who were treated to a power display unlike any in the event's history.

Fans took to Twitter throughout the night to share their thoughts about the youngest player ever to compete in the Home Run Derby, starting with immediate reaction to his record-breaking first-round. Darryl Strawberry shared the title with Wally Joyner in 1986.

Guerrero Jr. smashed 29 home runs in his first at-bat, setting a first-round record in the process.

The two went to a swing-off after they both hit eight homers in the tiebreaker.

The Atlanta Braves' Ronald Acuna Jr. did his best Ken Griffey Jr. impression by blowing bubbles in his gum while using all fields to open with 24 homers. The first swing-off ended in a tie, but Guerrero held on to win the second swing-off and advance.

Bob missed last year's tournament after having hip surgery, but Mike won the doubles title with replacement partner Jack Sock . Sam Querrey and Tennys Sandgren will set up an all-American clash in the fourth round after beating their respective opponent.

But by far, the standout Joc faced Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the second round, which went through three overtime periods with a ton of drama and ended with Vlad beating Joc by a 40-39 score.

Guerrero easily moved on to the next round after Oakland Athletics' slugger Matt Chapman, a late replacement for the Milwaukee Brewers' Christian Yelich, managed 13 homers while getting fewer good pitches to hit from his father.

"This was surreal", Alonso said. That fell just short of Alonso, who needed 45 seconds to hit his first homer and labored his way to hit his 14th with one second left before his 30-second bonus would have kicked in. The 2019 edition at Progressive Field in Cleveland is certainly in the discussion.

Bell hit 18 homers and was eliminated.

Joc did the Dodgers proud, totaling the most homers in a round by a Dodger and beating Alex Bregman of the Astros by a score of 21-16.

When the ballpark gates opened at 5:30 fans, majority wearing gloves, scrambled down the concourses to secure prime standing-room-only spots along the railing above the left-field wall and behind the lower bowl seats in right.
