Two people gored while running with the bulls at Pamplona

The festival regularly stokes debate about the treatment of animals.

Three people were rushed to hospital this morning at the start of the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, northern Spain. It wasn't immediately clear how serious the goring was.

The San Fermin Festival brings in almost 1 million visitors every year, and so far this year, 5 people have sustained injuries that are being called as "gruesome".

This year, three men, two Americans and a Spaniard, were gored by bulls in the run.

The Red Cross in Spain had warned that the event would be especially risky because of the large number of people. In the run-up to animal rights activists had protested against the event, because the bulls are dying in the evening in the Arena.

During the nine-day San Fermin fiesta, six bulls are run through the city's narrow streets every morning and then killed in afternoon bullfights.

It is understood one of the grandfathers was holding the child when she slipped from his arms. The family had reached the end of their seven day cruise at the time of the incident.

The local Red Cross said its emergency personnel had attended to an additional 48 people for minor injuries, including two who had been trampled by the racing bulls.

Led by an ox, the herd covered the distance quickly in two minutes and 23 seconds, and did not slip and crash into the fence on the curve leading into Estafeta street, a traditional pitfall in previous years.

The festival, which also involves religious processions, concerts and all-night drinking, attracts thousands of visitors from around the world.

Traditionally, it was used as a way of getting the bulls from the city outskirts to the bull ring.

The last death was in 2009, when Daniel Jimeno Romero died during the quirky celebration.

What is the Running of the Bulls and when is the Pamplona Bull Run 2019?

"The festival organisers confine them to a small pen for several days".
