Where is Ridgecrest, CA? Kern County town hit by earthquakes

- An quake with a magnitude of 7.1 jolted Southern California on Friday night, one day after a 6.4 magnitude temblor struck in the same region.

A second quake of 5.8 magnitude struck the area September 20, the seismologist said, causing over 1,900 more aftershocks in the two weeks that followed.

Friday's quake was the strongest in around two decades, and about 10 times stronger than the 6.4 magnitude quake that rattled the same area on Thursday. Eventually, the system will send out alerts over the same system used for Amber Alerts to defined areas that are expected to be affected by a quake, de Groot said.

Ridgecrest Police Chief Jed McLaughlin said so far only minor injuries had been reported.

The light damage was largely due to the remoteness of the area where the tremblor occurred.

"He's committed in the long haul, the long run, to help support the rebuilding efforts", Newsom said of Trump. Officials said most employees live off the base and in Ridgecrest, but they authorized the evacuation so those who live on base can be eligible for reimbursements.

"We do know there were a number of injuries, but a lot of them I would characterize in the minor to moderate level", CalOES director Mark Guilarducci said Saturday.

A USGS official said people should expect at least one more of magnitude 6.1 or higher. Newsom said he has activated the state emergency operation center to its highest level.

A United States weapons testing facility in Ridgecrest, Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, said on its Facebook page that it sustained "infrastructure damage" as a result of Thursday's and Friday's earthquakes. Fires broke out, gas lines were broken and a major hospital was evacuated, the mayor said that night.

Shaking was felt in central and southern California, southern Nevada and as far south as Mexico, according to the USGS.

The quake struck at 8:19 p.m. and was centered 11 miles from Ridgecrest in the same areas where the previous quake hit.

Two smaller quakes followed, and the U.S. Geological Survey reported that the region is still averaging an aftershock per minute.

There were reports of building fires, mostly as a result of gas leaks or gas-line breaks, Ghilarducci said.

Local fire and police officials said they were initially swamped by calls for medical and ambulance service.

Seismologists say there have been 1,700 aftershocks in the wake of the initial temblor that shook Southern California Thursday. Preliminary estaminets pegged its magnitude at 7.1.

According to the NAWS China Lake website, the facility is the Navy's largest single landholding, covering more than 1.1 million acres - an area larger than the state of Rhode Island - in Kern, San Bernardino and Inyo counties. The epicenter was about 7 miles northwest of the 6.4 magnitude Fourth of July foreshock.

According to Jones, there is a 50% chance of an natural disaster with a magnitude of 6.0 or higher in the coming days and a 10% chance the area will see an quake with a magnitude of 7.0 or higher.
