Plantation explosion: Injuries reported at Florida shopping complex

At least 21 people were injured, including two seriously, after an apparent gas explosion Saturday shattered parts of a shopping mall in the south Florida city of Plantation, authorities said.

Ruptured gas lines were found in the rubble at the scene in Plantation, Fla., outside Fort Lauderdale in Broward County around 11:30 a.m. EDT.

Photos of the site showed a huge chunk of the shopping mall destroyed, with debris lying around in a wide radius. Debris flew about 100 yards across the street, WJXT in Jacksonville reported.

The Plantation fire department said on Twitter that there were multiple patients being treated at the scene.

Witnesses said a vacant restaurant appeared to be ground zero for the blast. Among the injured was a child, but the injuries were no classified as serious, Gordon said.

All stores and businesses in the area around the blast-ravaged Fountains Plaza were closed. The business released a statement saying its center was "completely destroyed" and will be closed until further notice.
