De Jong issues plea to ex-teammate De Ligt

De Jong issues plea to ex-teammate De Ligt

Pointing out the similarities in Barcelona, Ajax and the Netherland National team.

"I have known where De Ligt will play [next season] for a long time", said the president, referencing comments made previously to ESPN in April.

"However that decision is not up to me".

Bartomeu also said on Friday that Barcelona were not pursuing Neymar's signing and admitted there had been a meeting for Griezmann with Atletico Madrid.

In De Jong, Barca feel they have a player capable of becoming the heir to both Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets, such is his well-rounded style of play.

De Jong is naturally excited to have Lionel Messi as a team-mate, with the Argentinian having driven Barcelona to new heights over the last decade.

"Then one day the board members came to the Netherlands on a surprise visit and they convinced me", he said. "In a meeting, I never talk about money".

Barcelona hold talks with Atletico over Griezmann signing
The club have told Griezmann he must present himself for preseason training next Sunday with the rest of his players . France forward Griezmann , 28, said in May he would leave Atletico this summer and has buyout clause of 120m euros.

"As a child it was a dream for me to play at Barca, and now I'm here so it's great".

New Barcelona signing Frenkie de Jong will take inspiration from famous predecessors such as the late Johan Cruyff as he looks to settle in to life at Camp Nou. Sources have told ESPN FC that Barca have an agreement with the Dutch club, but they are still waiting for the centre-back to make his final decision.

De Ligt would certainly improve United's leaky defence but there are serious question marks over whether he would be convinced to join.

De Jong, who plays with the defender at global level, says De Ligt must decide what is best for him.

"I'd like to see him [De Ligt] here, but I can not decide".

With Matthijs de Ligt heading to Juventus in all probability, who would you like to be his alternative for Barcelona to pursue during this summer?

"We will see where he goes".
