Rahul Gandhi resigns as India's Congress party leader after crushing defeat

Rahul Gandhi resigns as India's Congress party leader after crushing defeat

"Rebuilding the party requires hard decisions", Gandhi wrote.

"Following the example of our party president Rahul Gandhi, Tejashwi Yadav, who was the face of the Opposition and led its campaign during the last Lok Sabha poll in Bihar, too should step down from the post of Opposition leader in the Assembly", State Congress leader Rajesh Kumar said.

Political commentator Sushila Ramaswamy, who teaches in Delhi University, said the Congress party should come out of the Gandhi family's shadow.

Rahul has also removed the tag of party President from his Twitter bio hours after confirming his resignation from the top post.

Though the Congress chief has made his decision after the party's crushing defeat in the recently concluded general elections, party leaders are still planning to ask him to reconsider the matter.

Incidentally, it is not necessary for Mr Gandhi to attend the meeting. "I have learned so much from the spirit and dedication of our workers and party members, men and women who have taught me about love and decency", he added.

In his four-page letter, Rahul Gandhi said he at times stood completely alone in the fight against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), the ideological backbone of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Gandhi announced on May 25, two days after the Lok Sabha election results became known, that he would resign as the Congress chief after the party was drubbed.

"For a mere political score, the accused (Gandhi) had unnecessarily dragged the name of RSS and it is a move to rake up negative sentiments in the minds of people against the RSS", Joshi's complaint said. "It is for this reason that I have resigned as Congress President", the letter read. To achieve this important task, the Congress Party must radically transform itself.

News agency ANI reported that Rahul Gandhi has pleaded not guilty and has been released on Rs 15000 surety amount. But his resignation Wednesday left a leadership vacuum in the Congress party.

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi's sister and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi hailed her brother saying only "few have the courage that you do". However, the CWC unanimously rejected his offer to quit the party.

"In case, the reins of Congress remain in the hands of Rahul Gandhi, we can change the situation in 2022 when elections will be held in some states", Rawat said. However, he would continue to hold charge of Assam, Congress leaders said. The main criticism used to be the Gandhi family (and dynastic politics).
