Multiple people injured in explosion at Florida shopping plaza

Plantation Fire and Rescue report "multiple patients" following a gas explosion at a shopping center.

Plantation Fire Battalion Chief Joel Gordon said two people suffered serious injuries in the blast that was reported at the Plaza Market on University shopping center off South University Drive near Peters Road.

A major avenue running past the mall was shut down.

The explosion happened on Saturday morning at a shopping center in Plantation, west of Fort Lauderdale in Broward county.

Videos posted to social media showed several buildings with extensive damage, including collapsed roofs and shredded exteriors - and one structure that appeared to be destroyed.

Windows were shattered and debris was scattered throughout the area and parking lot.

The authorities also announced on Twitter that the street was closed to traffic.

The Plantation Fire Department could not immediately be reached for comment. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
