Russian missile defense system to arrive in 10 days: Erdogan

Saying he has the blessing of US President Donald Trump, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Russian S-400 missile defense systems that could undermine North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and Greece will be delivered and that there will be no American sanctions.

"In such a period, the value of cooperation between Turkey and Japan has risen even further", he said and highlighting the deep-rooted and multi-directional friendly relations between the Turkish and Japanese peoples. Turkey has been "treated very unfairly", said President Trump, without making any reference to Ankara's demands for joint production of the system.

The deal has not been officially disclosed, but leaks showed that it favours the Israeli interests at the expense of Palestinian rights. Trump did not rule out sanctions. Turkey's economy, the largest in the Middle East, is in recession after a currency crisis previous year chopped 30% from the lira and sent inflation and unemployment soaring.

Speaking shortly after bilateral talks with Trump at the G20 summit in Japan, Erdogan said that the S-400s would be delivered in the first half of July, adding he had heard directly from Trump that there would be no sanctions. Buying military equipment from NATO-foe Russian Federation leaves Turkey vulnerable to USA retribution under a 2017 law known as the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, or CAATSA. "I would imagine US diplomat and defense department officials are in disbelief - Trump is like the proverbial bull in the China shop". "So (Erdogan) goes out, he goes to Russian Federation, and makes a deal for the S-400", Trump said.

Opelka, who will next face 15th seed Milos Raonic , said that he had "always been a pretty good mover - underrated maybe". At the end he went for it. "He went bigger than me and he deserved to win", a disappointed Wawrinka said afterwards.

The S-400 air defense missile system is considered the most advanced of its kind in Russian Federation, capable of destroying targets at a distance of up to 400 km and a height of up to 30 km. In an effort to sway Turkey away from the S-400s, the United States has offered to supply it with Raytheon Co Patriot missiles.

Erdogan was quoted by NTV as saying: "One S-400 is worth three Patriots".

The US administration has threatened to impose severe sanctions on Turkey if the S-400 missiles deal with Moscow is followed through.
