"We are seeing more than double the number of mosquitos that carry the West Nile virus than what we've seen in the last five years", said Maricopa County Health Director, Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine.

The North Dakota Department of Health says people infected with West Nile virus experience no symptoms. "Symptoms range from a slight headache and low-grade fever to swelling of the brain or brain tissue and, in rare cases, death".

West Nile virus was confirmed in most in counties in 2018. Despite no human cases reported of the disease so far in 2019, ISDH expects to see increased West Nile activity throughout in as summer progresses.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most people who become infected with West Nile virus do not develop any symptoms. Cases are most common from mid-July through late September.

Residents are also encouraged to take precautions to prevent exposure to mosquitoes by eliminating breeding sites and standing water on their properties, and wearing insect repellent containing deet. Follow the directions on the package.

· Install or fix screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of your residence. Change the water in pet dishes and replace the water in bird baths weekly.

West Nile virus in horses can be fatal.

Jamestown Canyon is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause fever and meningitis, mostly in adults. Approximately 33 percent of horses infected with West Nile virus will die.
