Desperate Sri Lanka clash with West Indies in must-win game

While the Windies did not live up to expectations at the ICC World Cup, head coach Floyd Reifer strongly believes that the future of the team is in good hands.

Reifer's side were officially eliminated from the race to qualify for the semi-finals after losing to India on Thursday.

Pooran, 23, held the innings together but the West Indies' hopes were badly hit when Carlos Brathwaite was unluckily run out when bowler Isuru Udana diverted the ball into the stumps off his fingertips, with the batsman well out of his ground.

This means a total of 45 matches will be played, with each team playing a total of nine matches.

"I played hard and I am very happy to get a hundred in my first World Cup", said Fernando.

"We had a long conversation in the dressing room, so we did a lot of soul-searching", Reifer told reporters on Sunday.

"Only we can control the matches we are going to play, the two matches, so we are trying to give our best and try to win these two matches and, hopefully, if we have a chance, we definitely can be in the top four teams".

Ex-Chelsea captain John Terry said there is "no one better equipped" to manage the club than his former team-mate. The former England midfielder has had permission to speak with the Europa League winners since last Tuesday.

"It is important for us and important for the fans in the Caribbean as well, for us to put up the performances, even at the back end of the World Cup".

"We have a good young group of players".

It was their latest failure to rise to the occasion in the tournament and Reifer conceded they haven't coped well when games are up for grabs. I think we had a good chance. You look back at our tournament, we played well against Pakistan.

On the other side, Sri Lanka had a disastrous start against New Zealand at Sophia Gardens but Dimuth Karunaratne and team didn't lose hope and made a tremendous comeback in the match against Afghanistan at the same pitch.

Defending Champions Australia were the first to book a final-four spot and will be battling for the top position with India and New Zealand as the league phase draws to a close.

Reifer said his team "didn't seize the key moments" in some games.

"We didn't bat properly". So it's just small things that we didn't do, the one percenters that didn't we do well. "It is important that we keep building what we did well here as well in the World Cup because we did some things well". Still we have a chance, I think, but we have to win these two games and wait to see what will happen in the other games.
