"Just seemed like the flawless fit in terms of what he can bring in terms of his experience", Dubas said at a Scotiabank Arena news conference. "The league is about depth now, and you see the teams that play to the end, you need all four lines".

I'm not sure that historically a team has ever chosen to go so one dimensional.

The veteran centre and local product signed a one-year contract worth US$700,000 with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday as National Hockey League free agency opened. Having someone who has gone through that, went to a Cup final, who can serve as a mentor to our guys ... though you think your team is extremely good and you'll be doing this a long time, the window can close.

Firstly, I want to point out that although we did get rid of the Zaitsev contract we had to sweeten it with the hometown boy in Brown, which does hurt knowing that he could have got us something else in another deal.

The 24-year-old Hamilton-born Harpur played a total of 92 games for the Sens the past two years.

Brown collected eight goals and added 21 assists for the Leafs last season, but is two years removed from a 20-goal campaign.

"It doesn't seem real, to be honest", Spezza said. He added one assist in seven playoff games.

Dalai Lama says Trump 'lacks moral principle'
The Dalai Lama has also weighed into the European immigration debate during the wide-ranging interview. "That is wrong. He said that real beauty is inner beauty but also emphasised on the outer appearance. "But we're human beings".

"I definitely have a little bit of a chip on my shoulder", he said.

A big point producer most of his career, Spezza added that he's looking forward to learning about different aspects of the game from Babcock.

The Toronto Maple Leafs, who self-inflicted themselves with cap issues through the signing of Tavares, have found a dance partner in the Ottawa Senators to take on the contract of Nikita Zaitsev for the next 5 years at $4.5 million dollars.

The move was a shrewd one for Dubas, as there was rumblings that trading Zaitsev would be difficiult considering he still has five years and $22.5 million remaining on his deal.

The Senators identified the Leafs as a team they wanted to speak with and though the focus will be on Zaitsev, Brown will get an expanded role in Ottawa. Due a $3-million signing bonus Monday, his salary cap hit will be $4.5 million in 2019-20.

The Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators got a head start on th NHL's free agent shopping day with a six-player trade featuring three defencemen.
