Buckle up: Record number of Americans to travel for Independence Day

More than 41 million are expected to hit the road, while about 4 million will travel by plane.

"As Independence Day approaches, it's time for the much-loved family road trip and this year will be one for the record books, with more Americans than ever planning vacations", said Paula Twidale, vice president of AAA Travel.

The travel volume, which is a four-percent increase over previous year, is the highest recorded for any holiday since the auto club began tracking travel n 2000.

The majority will travel by vehicle, 41.1 million to be exact, according to the forecast.

White says the average price of gas in Nebraska is around $2.54 a gallon, 17 cents below the national average, and down from last year's $2.76 a gallon at this time. In major metros, drivers could face delays as much as four times a normal commute. The busiest day for rental pick-ups is expected to be Wednesday, July 3.

AAA said delays are expected to increase by 9 percent nationwide.

Average auto rental rates are 5% higher than a year ago, at $69 daily.

AAA predicts that almost 49 million people will be on the move.

AAA recommends motorists take their vehicle to a AAA Car Care Insurance Travel Center or trusted fix facility to perform any needed maintenance before heading out on a road trip. Additionally, motorists should be prepared for an emergency, which means having a first-aid kid, a flashlight with extra batteries, a basic tool kit as well as water and snacks in case you're stranded roadside for an extended period.
