Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt to face Brexit questions in Northern Ireland

Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt have been warned by the Chancellor that there will be no extra cash to meet their spending pledges in the event of a no-deal Brexit. "We also think there is room to make some sensible tax cuts as well, and we will be doing that too".

Ballot papers will be issued to Conservative party members from later this week in the contest between Boris Johnson and Mr Hunt.

Mrs Batters added: "While this sum of money may seem significant, it can only have a limited impact on mitigating the devastation a no-deal Brexit would have on farming and the British economy in the long term".

During the speech, Hunt called for the "immediate ramping up of no-deal preparations", saying that Britain needs a leader who is "prepared to put in the hard yards preparing for a no-deal Brexit", underscoring that point by adding that, "you can not leave the European Union on a wing and a prayer".

"The "fiscal firepower" we have built up in case of a no-deal Brexit will only be available for extra spending if we leave with an orderly transition", Hammond said on Twitter.

"If there is no engagement on the deal, if it is apparent that the [EU] Commission is simply not interested in negotiating, if there is no willingness to tackle the shortcomings of the backstop then there will be no kicking the can down the road and we will intensify and finalise our preparations to leave without a deal".

"That's also not the way we work together".

The EU has repeatedly said it will not renegotiate Britain's withdrawal deal reached with Prime Minister Theresa May, which has been rejected by Britain's parliament three times.

Mr Hammond's warning came as Mr Hunt announced a £6 billion war chest to handle a no-deal Brexit.

Jeremy Hunt, a leadership candidate for Britain's Conservative Party, appears on BBC TV's The Andrew Marr Show in London, Britain June 30, 2019.

Mr Hunt has argued it is a "fake deadline" and that if a deal is close, he would be prepared to ask for a delay.
