ATP Wimbledon: Roger Federer overcomes slow start to topple Lloyd Harris

Eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer overcame a first set scare to reach the second round on Tuesday beating South African debutant Lloyd Harris 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. "She beat Naomi (Osaka) in Paris and is a feisty competitor and hits big", 19th seed Konta told the BBC. Asked to elaborate, he said: "I just played bad".

Last year, the Spaniard reached the semifinals at the All England Club for the first time since 2011 before losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in five sets. The Australian player is set to play Alison Van Uytvanck in the second round after the Belgian battled for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win over Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova.

"I can't go into Grand Slams thinking about records". Federer dominated after that, breaking his opponent twice in each of the next three sets and serving out the match with an ace.

Barty, who is bidding to become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2015 to win both the French Open and Wimbledon in the same season, said the weight of being No. 1 did not affect her particularly.

Muguruza lost to Brazilian qualifier Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round, making for a second straight early exit for the Spaniard since winning the title in 2017. "I was amazed at how good these guys were and who would have thought that I'd be on that same court playing against him".

Germany's Angelique Kerber and Australia's Ashleigh Barty kicked off their participation in the 2019 Wimbledon Championships with victories over Tatjana Maria and Saisai Zheng, respectively on Tuesday.

Querrey's only Grand Slam semifinal appearance came at the All England Club in 2017 after a victory over defending champion Andy Murray.

Also advancing to the second round were Belgium's Elise Mertens, who beat Fiona Ferro 6-2 6-0 and China's Wang Qiang who eased past Vera Lapko 6-2 6-2.

Chasing his ninth title at Wimbledon, second seed Federer - who last won here two years ago - appeared to be going through the motions before he stumbled in the sixth game of the opening set.
