Maple Leafs sign Kapanen, Johnsson to extensions

The 50-year-old from Warburg, Alta., was sacked on December 17 after Philadelphia started the 2019-20 campaign 12-15-4.

The 50-year-old spent over a decade as the head coach of the University of North Dakota before taking the reins for the Philadelphia Flyers at the start of the 2015-16 season. Mr. Hakstol was most recently a member of Canada's coaching staff at the world championships in Slovakia.

Also Saturday, Toronto announced the signing of goalie Michael Hutchinson and defenceman Martin Marincin to one-year contracts worth $700,000 US.

The 29-year-old Hutchinson will likely back up Frederik Andersen in net, even though the Leafs have Garret Sparks under contract for next season as well.

In 111 career National Hockey League games with the Leafs, Panthers and Winnipeg Jets, Mr. Hutchinson has a 46-43-13 record with a 2.70 goals-against average, a.908 save percentage and four shutouts.

Manchester United agree personal terms with forward
Manchester United have finally agreed to terms in principle with Sevilla striker, Wissam Ben Yedder , according to La Colina de Nervion .

Kapanen signed a three-year, $9.6 million extension, while Johnsson inked a four-year, $13.6 million deal.

Marincin, 27, appeared in 24 games last season for the Maple Leafs, scoring one goal and four assists. Johnsson had 20 goals and 23 assists, including a goal and three assists in the Leafs' first-round exit against Boston.

But with free agency set to open Monday, fellow RFA and star forward Mitch Marner remains unsigned.

Once the Leafs traded Patrick Marleau's contract at the draft last weekend - saving them $6.25 million - Dubas could move on signing Johnsson and Kapanen.

He has 30 points (four goals, 26 assists) in 201 regular-season games in his career.
