Timberwolves will reportedly meet with D'Angelo Russell

The idea behind that logic is that the Nets will chase after two max-contract free agents.

Meanwhile, the Nets are reportedly in the midst of trying to lure Irving and Durant to Brooklyn, which would not allow Russell to re-sign. One team interested in finding a way to acquire Russell either via free agency or sing-and-trade: The Minnesota Timberwolves.

However, the Nets will also look for sign-and-trades involving Russell so they can get something in return for him. The Lakers have the cap space to sign him.

This is an interesting conversation, especially considering that Bleacher Report's Ric Bucher reported just days ago that Jimmy Butler would be open to taking less than the max to sign with the Lakers. The All-Star guard was shipped out of Los Angeles in what was essentially a salary dump during the summer of 2017. This is a shift by Butler and could reflect the value of the Lakers in his eyes now that they are about to pair Anthony Davis with LeBron James.

In addition to agreeing to a deal with Irving, the Nets are expected to renounce their rights to D'Angelo Russell, who was instrumental in leading the Nets back to the playoffs last season. According to National Basketball Association rules, a restricted free agent is eligible to sign an offer sheet with any team, but the player's original team can retain their services by matching the terms of that offer.

National Basketball Association free agency will begin at 6:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 30th.
