At least 15 killed in wall collapse following incessant rains in Pune

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Saturday ordered an in-depth inquiry into the incident of wall collapse in Pune, in which 15 people were killed. More persons are likely trapped under the debris, said sources.

The tragedy comes in the backdrop of the city reeling under the onslaught of relentless showers in the past 48 hours.

Pune has been receiving heavy rainfall since the last few days.

Pune received 73.1 millimetres of rain in the 24 hours until5pm on Saturday, the second highest in June since 2010.

"It appears that the incessant downpour may have loosened the soil around the retaining wall of the Alcon Stylus society".

Taking to Twitter to announce the decision, he said, "Extremely saddened to know about the loss of lives in the Kondhwa, Pune wall collapse incident".

Pune District Collector Naval Kishor Ram has formed a three-member team comprising the additional collector, a police officer and a civic officer to investigate the incident.

In Pune, the Kondhwa wall collapse focussed attention on illegal constructions in the area that civil officials haven't been able to deter. "My heart goes out to the kin of all those who lost their loved ones, and wish speedy recovery to the injured", he said in a statement. All those who died - 10 men, a woman and four children - were from Bihar's Katihar district. The injured have been shifted to Sassoon Hospital in the city.

On Saturday, Trump declined to say whether he would address the death of Khashoggi, who was a critic of the crown prince, in his meeting.

"The bodies will be sent to their families by flights to Patna".

Police had earlier said that 17 people were killed in the incident.

In July 2016, nine labourers were killed on the spot when a slab of a building under construction collapsed in Balewadi area.
