At First Democratic Debate, Booker Makes Inroads

Cory Booker and Texas congressman Beto O'Rourke among others, posted solid ratings and total viewership, but was unable to match the prolific numbers of the 2016 cycle's first round.

Like numerous candidates on Wednesday night's presidential debate stage in Miami, Julián Castro needed to win over a national audience of potential voters who largely didn't know who he was. "And we need to make structural change in our government, in our economy, and in our country".

Twitter critics soon went to town on the comment with some speculating the words would define his campaign, while others criticized Biden for not making the most of every second.

Shortly after the debate, his campaign issued a statement that said the "the far-left, socialist policies Democrats embraced tonight were akin to a mutual political suicide pact".

The Equality Act would add LGBTQ protections to existing civil rights law.

If the overarching question heading into the first debate of the 2020 presidential primary for Democratic voters was "Who can you see as president up there?" it's not certain they got a clear answer.

They were followed on Thursday night by former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, Rep. Eric Swalwell (Calif.), author Marianne Williamson and entrepreneur Andrew Yang, as well as Bennet, Biden, Buttigieg, Gillibrand, Harris and Sanders.

It was a message primed to resonate in Miami, with richly diverse Hispanic communities that have also drawn the attention and focus of President Donald Trump's re-election campaign.

Candidates were divided over a controversial question for the party: whether to abolish private insurance and switch to government health care. No one cared about the time limits. It was remarkable that she and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio were the only ones to raise their hands to say they did. Former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke and Sen. During the debate, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar and Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard voiced their support for signing the USA back onto the nuclear deal.

Wimbledon 2019: Youngster Cori Gauff drawn to face Venus Williams
Gauff could perhaps be the first 15-one year-veteran in the important plan since Britain's Laura Robson in 2009. At age 15, Gauff has already established herself as one of professional tennis' most marketable young stars.

The exchange is nearly certain to be revived on Thursday when Bernie Sanders is among the candidates who will be on stage.

"Right now we have a system that favors those who can pay for access and outcomes, that's how you explain an economy that is rigged to corporations and to the very wealthiest", O'Rourke continued in English.

Immigration was also on their minds as the candidates' minds as they pointed to the searing photos of a drowned Salvadoran father and his toddler daughter at the Rio Grande and blamed Trump and his policies on migrants crossing into America illegally. Unlike many of his fellow candidates who seemed riled and angry, Castro demonstrated a cool confidence and a fiery passion over the issues. "It should also piss us all off".

Other than those skirmishes, Democrats waged a largely civil debate with few instances of the type of bitter confrontation that has dominated politics in the Trump era.

None of the candidates openly stumbled. Nearly all of the news anchors have previously moderated debates during the 2016 election season. The field features six women, two African Americans, one Asian American and two men under 40, one of them gay.

The Minnesota senator, who occupies the party's more centrist lane, confidently pushed back as a male rival claimed he was the lone candidate to pass legislation protecting women's reproductive rights. "I'm with Bernie [Sanders] on Medicare for All", Senator Warren said.

As the lone candidate considered to be top tier, all Warren had to do was not embarrass herself and hit all her marks.

According to NBC, the debate live stream garnered more than 9 million viewers across all platforms, including NBCNews.com, MSNBC.com, Telemundo.com, and NBC News NOW.
