According to the state, the tunnel links Port Huron with Sarnia, Ontario by crossing under the St. Clair River.

James Freed, Port Huron city manager, stated "My office is actively monitoring the train derailment within the worldwide train tunnel". "We're there for safety purposes, there are no injuries to report and no off-site impact or public hazard at this time".

It was not immediately clear when the tunnel would reopen.
