Trump criticises USWNT captain Rapinoe for not singing anthem

Rapinoe has drawn significant attention for protesting during the national anthem - and, while addressing her protest in a series of comments to Eight By Eight Magazine, she expressed doubt that Trump will invite the US women's soccer team to the White House.

The reigning champion USA team has been on a tear so far in the FIFA Women's World Cup.

Defending champions United States of America face hosts France in the World Cup quarter-finals in Paris on Friday after defeating Spain 2-1 in the round of 16 on Monday. She had already received backlash for becoming the first white athlete to kneel during the anthem in 2016 after National Football League quarterback Colin Kaepernick started kneeling during the anthem in order to protest against perceived racism and inequality by law enforcement toward African Americans. Asked whether he thought her action was appropriate, Trump told The Hill: "No. But I feel in my heart it is right to continue to kneel during the national anthem, and I will do whatever I can to be part of the solution", she added. "But I can't do nothing when there are people in this country who have to deal with this kind of thing", said the Reign FC player.

She is one of the faces of the USA team, and she has been willing to use her platform to make a stand beyond soccer. "I love watching women's soccer", he said during the Hill interview.

The US national team is competing in the Women's World Cup, and plays host country France on Friday.

"No. I don't think so", he responded.

The 33-year-old became the first white athlete to kneel during the national anthem before a sporting event in 2016.

Rapinoe also offered some choice words for Trump in that same interview, calling him "sexist", "misogynistic", "small-minded", "racist" and "not a good person".

"But I haven't taken a position on that at all". I know that when you have the great stars like [Portugal's Cristiano] Ronaldo and some of these stars ...

Contrary to how the media are going to portray it, the president did so by succinctly stating his opposition and praising the entire women's soccer team.

Rapinoe's team has always been battling for equal pay, though it tentatively agreed to enter into mediation after this year's World Cup. "I'd have to look at it".
