New US sanctions target Iran's supreme leader, military brass

Iran said the drone was over its territory, but the USA said it was in worldwide airspace.

"The Supreme Leader of Iran is the one who is ultimately responsible for the hostile conduct of the regime", Mr Trump said.

The Treasury Department headed by Mnuchin said that in addition to Khamenei, the US sanctions also targeted eight senior commanders in the Iranian military and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. By that we mean an approach where the United States remains strong while finding a way to propel the Iranian regime down a path of our choosing - one that leads Iran away nuclear ambitions and away from confrontations that escalate military tensions - rather than reacting to the latest provocation.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is on the ground in Saudi Arabia and scheduled to make more stops in the Middle East to build support for the Trump administration's efforts to stop Iran. We don't even need to be there in that the USA has just become (by far) the largest producer of Energy anywhere in the world!

Tensions between Tehran and Washington have ratcheted up in the past month after the United States accused Iran of attacking two oil tankers in the Gulf of Hormuz.

"These commanders sit atop a bureaucracy that supervises the IRGC's malicious regional activities, including its provocative ballistic missile program, harassment and sabotage of commercial vessels in global waters, and its destabilizing presence in Syria", the Treasury Department said. "Otherwise, you can live in a shattered economy for a long time to come", Trump warned Iran in an interview with Meet the Press. It sits atop a vast network of tyranny and corruption that deprives the Iranian people of the freedom and opportunity they deserve, he said.

Donald Trump said he's willing to hold talks with Iran. The U.S. this year has pressured other countries to honor U.S. sanctions against Iran and to refuse to buy Iranian oil.

Sunday, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana said it was removing liquor dispensers from guest room minibars. The FBI said Friday it has sent personnel to the country to provide technical assistance to Dominican investigators.

"China gets 91% of its Oil from the Straight, Japan 62%, & many other countries likewise". Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the action would "literally" lock up "tens and tens of billions of dollars" of Iranian assets.

Sanctions were also imposed on eight senior commanders of Navy, Aerospace, and Ground Forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), the U.S. Treasury Department said.

"We've got concerns about the sanctions against Iran, [but] we are seeing a better demand picture because of the actions of central banks, which is benefiting all commodities. and we have got a weaker USA dollar", McCarthy said. Trump pulled the United States out of the deal in 2017, seeking its collapse.

"We want them to be more desperate", McCaul said on CBS's "Face the Nation" news program. Pompeo met King Salman as well as the king's son, de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The sultanate of Oman, meanwhile, said reports that it had served as a back channel for the United States to Iran in the aftermath of last week's drone shooting were "not true".

Iran's economy has already been crippled by the re-imposition of U.S. sanctions, which had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal, but Iranian officials sought to downplay Washington's latest move on Monday.
