Iran executes `defence ministry contractor` over spying for CIA

Iran has executed a "defence ministry contractor" convicted of spying for the US Central Intelligence Agency, semi-official news agency ISNA reported Saturday.

Jalal Hajizavar had left his post nine years ago and was convicted by a military court after an investigation which discovered documents and spying equipment at his home, the report said.

Officials say US military cyber forces earlier this week launched a retaliatory cyber strike against Iranian computer systems amid escalating tensions between the two countries.

Despite US claims that the drone had been flying over global waters, Iran says it has retrieved fragments of drone in its own territorial waters where it was shot down.

"Our diplomacy does not give Iran the right to respond with military force", Hook said in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

Over the past month, Iran has also been blamed for a series of attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf.

Pompeo met King Salman as well as the king's son, de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Donald Trump said he's willing to hold talks with Iran.

Two of the officials say President Donald Trump authorized the cyber strike even as he called off a conventional military response to Iran's downing of a USA surveillance drone.

"We are putting additional sanctions on Iran", Trump said. "In some cases we are going slowly, but in other cases we are moving rapidly".

The U.S. envoy on Iran, Brian Hook, said on June 21 that it is "important we do everything" to de-escalate tensions with Iran.

Iran has accused U.S. of violating its national sovereignty by flying the drone over the waters of the Strait of Hormuz, but Washington has maintained that the spying unmanned plane had been in worldwide airspace when hit by a missile.

"Iran will firmly confront any aggression or threat by America", spokesman Abbas Mousavi told the semiofficial Tasnim news agency on Saturday.

Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi retorted that U.S. "diplomacy" towards Tehran was "years of #EconomicTerrorism & war, and violating commitments".
