Buttigieg faces angry residents in heated town hall over police shooting

Members of the community vented their frustration, not only about this recent fatal shooting, but a long history of distrust between the police department and the black community of South Bend.

The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide unit is investigating the death of at least one person, according to the tweet.

"There is a lot beneath the surface when it comes to trust and legitimacy around policing and race in our city", the South Bend mayor said. The investigators said O'Neill's body camera wasn't automatically activated because he was driving slowly without emergency lights while looking through an apartment building parking lot. O'Neill has said Logan approached him with a knife, but he did not have his body camera on at the time of the shooting.

"I acknowledge that we haven't done enough", he said.

Buttigieg, who announced his presidential campaign earlier this year and quickly surged in the polls, largely put his campaign on hold this week, traveling back and forth to South Bend as he canceled multiple events across the country while keeping some engagements in Massachusetts, Florida and SC.

The 7-foot-2 sniper shot 56.1% from the field, 52% from three-point range and 75.7% from the free throw line. He also only played nine college games at OR because of a foot injury.

"There's more momentum to deal with this than ever", he said. I don't know if it's strategic or not, but it's my city. "It's my job to face it".

Buttigieg held the town hall at Washington High School in South Bend alongside Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski. "He's led our community, South Bend, well", Patton said.

Eleven people were shot at a South Bend bar Sunday, just hours before mayor and presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg addressed issues in his northern in city.

The melee broke out the same day Buttigieg is scheduled to speak at a town hall with South Bend's police chief. ".The problem will only get better when law enforcement and our community work together, and I am committed to doing just this".

St. Joseph County Police were also called to the scene to assist with crowd control at Memorial Hospital, located at 615 N Michigan St, in South Bend.

Others in the audience continuously interrupted Buttigieg as he spoke on stage, shouting rude comments and profanities the mayor's way.
