U.S. hits Iran with cyber attack

Tehran has warned the United States of serious consequences for the entire Middle East if Washington moves aggressively against Iran amid escalating tensions between the two countries the shooting down of an unmanned USA drone by the Islamic republic.

Trump spoke to reporters as he prepared to depart Washington for the presidential retreat Camp David in Maryland, where he said he would be deliberating on Iran.

Iranian sources told the Reuters news agency that Trump had warned Tehran via Oman that a USA attack was imminent, but he had said he was against war and wanted talks.

It was aimed at weapons systems used by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which shot down the United States drone last Thursday and which the USA says also attacked the tankers.

Trump also said a plane with 38 people on board was Iran's sights "and they didn't shoot it down". "I think that was a very wise decision", Trump told reporters.

The anchor of Trump's beloved TV channel reportedly convinced him that the "hawks" in the U.S. administration did not have the president's best interests at heart, and that if Trump unleashed a war on Tehran, he could kiss his chances of 2020 re-election goodbye.

Hours after his comments, Iran said it had executed a man convicted of spying for the US.

Trump previous year withdrew the United States from an worldwide accord created to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions in exchange for sanctions relief.

The Pentagon published a map of the drone's flight path indicating it avoided Iranian waters, but Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Saturday published maps showing the aircraft inside its territory when it was downed.

Trump insisted it is up to the Iranian leadership how the current crisis plays out.

USA defense officials refused to confirm the reports. In the past few weeks, the two countries feared of war as Iran allegedly attack oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman on two separate occasions.

"He'll be talking to the foreign ministry, we'll be looking to see what reaction comes from inside the prison to those conversations", Mr Ratcliffe said of Mr Murchison's talks with the government in Tehran.

The Cyber Command's strike against the Iranian spy group is said to have occurred on the same day that Iran shot down a $180million United States surveillance drone.

Tehran then did agree to limit its nuclear activity following the deal which in return meant there would be a lifting of their global sanctions. Gen. Mark Quantock told Yahoo News.

Last year, Israel shot down a drone it said appeared to be Iranian with a design based on the American RQ-170.

Over the past year U.S. officials have focused on persistently engaging with adversaries in cyberspace and undertaking more offensive operations.

Meanwhile, Etihad Airways has become the latest airline to announce it is suspending operations through Iranian airspace over the Straits of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.

Numerous world's airlines including Lufthansa, KLM, Cathay Pacific and Qantas Airways are among carriers re-routing flights to avoid the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran said on Saturday that its airspace was "safe and secure" for all planes to cross, Tasnim reported.

Citing two former intelligence officials, it reported that US Cyber Command targeted an Iranian spy group that has tracked the movement of ships passing through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
