The two sides have blamed each other for the breakdown, but both leaders have expressed a willingness to meet again, with Trump saying earlier this month that he had received a "beautiful letter" from Kim.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un received a personal letter from US President Donald Trump and will put serious thought into its content, North Korea's state-run news agency KCNA said.

"Kim Jong Un said that he would seriously contemplate the interesting content", the report said.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at the time that the letters addressed their commitment to work toward North Korea's "complete denuclearization".

Pyongyang pulled out all the stops to welcome Mr Xi, the first Chinese president to visit in 14 years - a period in which North Korea has carried out five nuclear tests and launched missiles capable of reaching the entire United States mainland.

Xi travelled to North Korea a week ahead of a planned meeting with Trump on the sidelines the Group of 20 summit in Japan, in what's shaping up to be a possible turning point in the trade war between the world's two largest economies. "Or did Trump unknowingly assent to something Kim said about doing so in his own letter and now Kim thinks Trump is on board (bad)?"

On Thursday, Kim, meeting in Pyongyang with Chinese President Xi Jinping, said that his country is waiting for a desired response in stalled nuclear talks with the United States.

The reporter then asked of Mr Trump: "Were you threatening me with prison time?".

KCNA reported that during a luncheon on the final day of Xi's visit the leaders discussed plans to strengthen collaboration, as well as their countries' "major internal and external policies", while exchanging views on domestic and worldwide issues of mutual concern. North Korea is seeking a step-by-step approach.

Analysts say North Korea's apparently friendly overtures to Trump signalled that Pyongyang was ready to break the deadlock with Washington after Kim's summit with Xi.

The second Trump-Kim summit ended abruptly in Hanoi.

He determined that the letter appeared to have a White House watermark and was dated June 12, 2019 - the one-year anniversary of the first Kim-Trump summit in Singapore.

"Confidentially, I didn't give it to you to take photographs of it - so don't play that game with me".
