Trump Orders ICE to Start Family Raids on Sunday

The newspaper said the operation would target up to 2,000 families in large cities that are major immigration destinations, including Houston, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles.

"I have directed - and Superintendent Johnson has confirmed - that CPD has terminated ICE's access to CPD's databases related to federal immigration enforcement activities", Lightfoot said in a statement, and reiterated the city's support for immigrant communities.

President Donald Trump said on Saturday that the USA immigration enforcement agency ICE was focused on getting the MS-13 gang out of the United States, as US cities braced for expected immigration raids on Sunday.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a statement that the city has taken steps to support immigrants families, and that ICE agents would get no assistance from the city. "They will be removed as fast as they come in", Trump tweeted.

In the later years of Barack Obama's presidency, the Department of Homeland Security deployed an operation targeting family units due to the uptick in families and unaccompanied minors attempting to cross the border, after initially focusing on felons.

"As always, ICE prioritizes the arrest and removal of unlawfully present aliens who have received criminal convictions; have pending criminal charges; are determined to be a national security or public safety threat; or are an immigration fugitive".

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner also struck a different note, saying he has not been directly notified by ICE about any plans to conduct raids, and stressing a need for "comprehensive immigration reform" in a statement Friday.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti in a statement called the enforcement efforts 'inhumane, disgraceful, and unsafe, ' adding 'we won't stand for it in Los Angeles'.
