Ocasio-Cortez sides with Booker over Biden's segregationists comments

Ocasio-Cortez sides with Booker over Biden's segregationists comments

"And I get what Joe Biden was trying to say in the same vein".

Presidential hopeful Joe Biden may be taking flak from Democrats over remarks he made about working with known segregationists early in his political career, but Nancy Pelosi is not one of those critics.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi also supported Mr Biden, saying it was important for candidates to convey authenticity, and "Joe Biden is authentic".

The home states of the senators were correctly identified, but their party affiliation was not. He used the example, from decades ago, working as a young senator with the racist Democratic senator from Mississippi, James Eastland. "They never look at Hillary Clinton's e-mail deletions", Trump said in an interview last week with "Fox & Friends".

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, a fellow Democratic presidential candidate and a white man who is married to a black woman, tweeted: "It's 2019 & @JoeBiden is longing for the good old days of "civility" typified by James Eastland".

In the midst of the controversy, Lemon on-air said he said Biden ought to be given the benefit of the doubt.

"There's not a racist bone in my body", Biden told reporters.

However, Biden did pick up the phone to speak with Booker following the former's Wednesday evening demand that he apologize.

Speaking at a fund-raiser Tuesday (June 19) in New York, Biden cited his relationships with Sens.

Following controversial comments about his past work with segregationists, Biden will make appeals to African Americans, including at a closed-door meeting with black leaders on Friday afternoon.

Eastland and Talmadge, both former senators, were white supremacists who opposed the civil rights movement.

"Vice President Biden's relationships with proud segregationists are not the model for how we make America a safer and more inclusive place for black people, and for everyone", Booker added.

Biden refused to apologize and even said that Cory Booker should be the one to apologize for mischaracterizing his statement.

"For his posture to be, 'I've done nothing wrong, you should apologize, I'm not a racist, ' is so insulting and so missing the larger point that he should not have to have explained to him, that this is not a lesson that someone who is running for president of the united states should have to be given", Booker said. They claim that as vice president, Biden pushed the Ukrainian government to fire a prosecutor viewed as an obstacle to good-governance reforms, while his son, Hunter, was on the payroll of a Ukrainian energy firm.

Now, after a quiet start to his campaign, Booker will head to SC for a high-profile weekend of campaigning, followed by the first debates next week, as a candidate in the national conversation. Instead, he's infuriating Democrats who say he's out of step with the diverse party of the 21st century and potentially undermining his argument that he's the most electable candidate in the race.

Had Biden not waxed nostalgically about the era of cooperating with racists, the Biden-Eastland anti-busing correspondence nearly surely wouldn't have come to light. "Because they trusted me".

"He considers certain things a resource".

Fallon said it was imperative for Biden or any Democratic nominee to define their campaign not just as a reaction to Trump - which he said could lead to "death by a thousand cuts" in endless scuffles with the president - but to pick fights of their own to boost Democratic enthusiasm and win over swing voters. Biden, in turn, said he wouldn't and added that Booker should apologize to him. "You don't have to agree with people to work with them". "At a time when we have from the highest offices in the land, a divisiveness, a racial hatred and bigotry being spewed, he should have the sensitivity to know that, 'This is a time I need to be an ally and I need to be a healer". I'm African-American. I have been at events with white friends where they had family members who, you know, just would randomly start talking about Denzel Washington or Michael Jordan as people they admired.
