Melissa Rycroft’s Rep Confirms She Got ‘Really Sick’ In The Dominican Republic

Despite a string of high-profile deaths this year of Americans from illnesses in the Dominican Republic, the U.S. State Department said Wednesday there has not been an "uptick" in fatal incidents of Americans in the Caribbean country.

A separate compilation report by CBS News revealed that a tourist from NY said she felt ill after drinking soda from Grand Bahia Principe Resort's minibar. ForwardKeys, a flight-data analysis firm, says cancellations have jumped 45 percent since the beginning of this month for flights next month and in August.

"If it had just been myself and my husband, we would still go", Zeier said.

"It started out very rough", Cox said of the Dominican Republic's cooperation.

The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention and the FBI are assisting in the investigations, officials said.

An American man who died at a hotel in the Dominican Republic last week became at least the ninth USA tourist to die at a Dominican Republic resort, or after becoming ill at one, over the past 13 months.

Miranda Schaup-Werner, 41, died at the Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville in La Romana on May 25.

Days later, Edward Holmes, 63, and Cynthia Day, 49, were found dead in their room at the neighboring Grand Bahia Principe resort. Both had internal bleeding and fluid in their lungs, Dominican authorities said. Wallace's family members claim he became ill after downing a scotch from his room's minibar. The resort initially reported the death as a heart attack, but Will says as long as he's known his mother, she has never had a heart condition. Wallace died in April, his relatives told CNN affiliate KTXL, while in the country for a wedding.

A doctor has said that the symptoms reported in the tourists who mysteriously died in the Dominican Republic are "consistent with poisoning".

According to the U.S. State Department's website, 13 Americans died in the Dominican Republic in 2018, but those deaths were not all from natural causes and included homicides, drownings and vehicle accidents. That averages about 18 annually.

The deaths represent a tiny percentage of the Americans who holiday on the island every year.

Jamaica (1.6 million) and the Bahamas (1.3 million) were second and third, respectively, among Caribbean nations for the number of stopover American tourists in 2018, the CTO says.
