Trudeau plans to meet with Trump in Washington this month

The new Mexico-U.S. -Canada Agreement, signed in November by the leaders of the three nations, is meant to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Former diplomat Michael Kovring and entrepreneur Michael Spavor were detained separately by Chinese authorities on December 10, days after Canadian officials arrested Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Chinese telecom giant Huawei, at the request of USA authorities.

U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence has said Trump will press Xi to release Kovrig and Spavor and will link the plight of the two Canadians to broader trade talks between Washington and Beijing.

Days later China arrested two Canadians - former diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor - in what is widely seen as a tit-for-tat move.

China ignored Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's personal request for dialogue to end a spiralling diplomatic row, his office revealed Wednesday.

That's unlikely to help Canada's cause, which looks even more hard after Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said Thursday that "the current setback China-Canada relations face are entirely caused by the Canadian side itself".

Freeland said she respects Chretien but said either Canada is either a rule of law country or is not.

Relations have improved since a low last summer when the US president called Trudeau "weak" and "dishonest". Trudeau has tabled the government's ratification bill and it is winding its way through Parliament - slowly - ahead of next week's adjournment of the House of Commons. Trump and Trudeau are trying to build momentum to pass the new trade deal that also includes Mexico.

International Minister Chrystia Freeland truly helpful CBC Radio last month she also sought a assembly at the side of her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, but was once unsuccessful. A day earlier, Freeland discussed trade with USA trade czar Robert Lighthizer and China with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
