Mr Trump said the troops could come from U.S. forces in Germany but avoiding directly criticising Vladimir Putin with the two set to meet in Japan in two weeks.

"You people would have a field day about that", Trump said from the White House during an appearance with Polish President Andrzej Duda, who first broached the idea of creating a Fort Trump in Poland during a previous sitdown.

Polish leaders had hoped to land a permanent US base in their country that they said could be called "Fort Trump", but the agreement announced Wednesday fell short of that.

Polish President Andrzej Duda visited the White House on Wednesday for talks with US President Donald Trump on a range of bilateral interests including security, trade, energy, and deepening the security partnership. At the same time, Trump praised Poland for increasing its defense spending to meet its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation commitments.

USA officials said earlier this week that Trump, in addition to the additional troops, would send a squadron of Reaper drones to Poland to aid its self-defense amid concerns about Russian military activity.

June has been a busy month for President Trump in terms of state visits as he has already visited the UK, Ireland and France.

"We are protecting Germany from Russian Federation and Russia is getting billions and billions (of dollars)", Trump said.

The increase in US forces in the region also reflects America's new national defense strategy that declares great-power competition with China and Russian Federation as a top priority.

Though Trump commented Wednesday that 2,000 US servicemembers could move to Poland, a USA official told Stars and Stripes on Tuesday that it could be 1,000 troops. While the press conference focused on areas of agreement, Trump said he differed with Poland's efforts to force the country's Supreme Court justices to retire early.

And a U.S. defense official said the two leaders will sign a joint political declaration with a broad-strokes military component that calls for about 1,000 additional United States troops to go to Poland on a rotational basis.

A joint combat center would also be set up.

"It is going to be an enduring [U.S. military] presence that will hopefully increase gradually", Duda said. This is seen by United States commanders as boosting readiness. "I really do", Trump said.

The U.S. resumed increasing its military activity in Europe in concert with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies following Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula in 2014.

The increase in USA forces in the region also reflects America's new national defense strategy that declares great-power competition with China and Russian Federation as a top priority.

Telling to reporters these judges were legacies of Poland's communist era, he also heard Mr Trump respond "no", when asked if he supported the move.

Though Trump did not elaborate on the types of units that could mobilize, the USA official said Tuesday that they are likely to be weighted toward logistics specialties.
