Kyrie Irving Will Not Exercise $21.3M Player Option With Celtics

Just a few weeks ahead of free agency, Kyrie Irving and his longtime agent Jeff Wechsler have parted ways.

Irving has always been the subject of speculation and that only grew when the Brooklyn Nets, who are said to have a strong interest in the veteran guard, paved the way to have two max contract slots this summer.

Given Jay-Z's previous ties to the Brooklyn Nets - he once owned a share of the team - some have speculated Irving signing with Jay-Z's agency could mean the Nets are now the favorite to sign Irving. Now, Irving has reportedly made another big decision. "Durant's free agency has been complicated by a ruptured right Achilles that will keep him out of the entire 2019-20 season". Irving, a six-time All-Star, will become an unrestricted free agent, and league sources say he remains intensely interested in the Brooklyn Nets.

As Charania reports, Irving can sign with any National Basketball Association team or sign a new deal with the Celtics when free agency opens.

Irving missed the 2017-18 postseason after playing in 60 games in his first season with the Celtics. He has put up strong individual numbers with the Celtics, averaging 23.8 points, 6.9 assists and 5.0 rebounds this past season.

But the Celtics have been just as successful, perhaps more, in the games Irving has missed.
