Canada to ban single-use plastics by 2021, Trudeau announces

Plastic pollution primarily affects marine ecosystems, and the prime minister said that Canada should lead the fight against plastic pollution as the country has the world's longest coastline.

Canada will ban many single-use plastic items by 2021, including bags, straws, cutlery and stirring sticks, to cut harmful waste damaging the country's ecosystems.

In Montreal, Trudeau is slated to announce a "host" of measures to reduce pollution, including "steps to get to a ban" on single-use plastics, the official, who could only speak under condition of anonymity, told the National Post.

The government said that 1 million birds and over 100,000 sea mammals worldwide are injured or die each year when they mistake plastic for food or become entangled.

"To be honest, as a dad, it's tough trying to explain this to my kids".

"How do you explain dead whales washing up on beaches around the world, their stomachs jam-packed with plastic bags?" he said. "Against all odds, you will find plastic at the very deepest point of the Pacific Ocean".

Several Canadian cities already ban the use of plastic bags, Montreal passed its ban past year, and some provinces have banned other products.

Canada follows in the footsteps of a host of other countries that have also set targets to ban single-use plastics in the coming years.

Speaking at a press event today (June 10) at Mont St-Hilaire, Quebec, Trudeau said the government also plans to work with the provinces to establish requirements for plastic-product manufacturers to make them ultimately responsible for the own plastic waste.

Plastic beverage bottles won't be banned in Europe but the European Union will require them to contain a minimum of 30 per cent recycled material by 2030, and a collection rate for recycling or reuse of 90 per cent by 2029. 57 million straws a day.

Despite movement on the plastic file, Carswell doesn't believe the push for action on plastics will end, as she said environmental and democratic activist groups continue to push all federal parties to incorporate climate justice into their platforms.

The document said that items such as shopping bags, straws, plastic utensils and take-out containers account for more than a third of Canadian plastic waste and a significant percentage of waste picked up near the shoreline. The NDP had earlier said it would ban single-use plastics by 2022 if elected.

Microplastics often come from larger plastics breaking down. "Every year, Canadians throw away over three million tons of plastic waste", he said in a statement.

Though it said small business owners support measures to protect the environment, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) stressed the need for a thorough economic impact assessment before taking steps to implement the ban. This represents up to $8 billion per year in lost value and wastes valuable resources and energy.

Trudeau promised on multiple occasions that a "Canadian solution" was in the works, but the waste continued to sit in ports near Manila.

"Many other countries are doing that and Canada will be one of them", Trudeau said.
