"These individuals, each one of them, all of them, have been jailed and will go before a court", Bautista Almonte said.

Five suspects, including the alleged gunman, have been detained in the shooting of former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz, the Dominican Republic's chief prosecutor said on Wednesday (Thursday NZT).

While the alleged shooter and four other suspects have been detained, and the handgun used in the attack recovered, the critical question of a motive remained unanswered.

The Dominican Republic's chief prosecutor Jean Alain Rodriguez spoke at a news conference on Wednesday. "Certainly that will continue".

Shortly after the shooting, Ortiz was rushed to a local hospital and was in the intensive care unit after being treated for bleeding in his liver and having portions of his intestines and gall bladder removed, said Leo Lopez, his spokesman.

Ortiz was shot in the back at close range on Sunday while sitting at an outdoor bar in Santo Domingo, the Caribbean nation's capital city.

The longtime Red Sox slugger has taken some steps at the hospital and has been able to sit up.

The 43-year-old arrived in Boston on Monday night for the surgery and is in stable condition, his wife, Tiffany, said in a statement.
