Wambach defends US after 13-0 humiliation of Thailand

U.S. ran riot during their opening World Cup match, scoring 13 - yes - THIRTEEN goals against an inexperienced Thailand team.

The lopsided score didn't draw the brunt of the criticism, it was what many deemed were the over-the-top celebrations by the Americans, especially after some of their late goals when the game was already out of hand.

European champions the Netherlands beat New Zealand 1-0 in Le Havre in Group E on Tuesday thanks to a Jill Roord goal in stoppage time.

"I respect Thailand, I celebrate that they are here".

When asked in her post-match press conference about the scoreline reaching "embarrassing levels", Ellis, whose side scored 10 times in the second half, said: "This is a world championship so every team here has been fantastic to get to this point".

"Honestly, if anyone wants to come at our team for not doing the right thing, not playing the right way, not being the right ambassador, they can come at us", Rapinoe said.

"I just think it was way too much scoring, way too much celebrating", Kilmeade said.

"We have to look at the group stage as every goal counts and it was important for us to continue to go", said Morgan.

"For all that have issue with many goals: for some players this is there first World Cup goal, and they should be excited", the scorer of a record 184 global goals tweeted to her 679,000 followers.

Alex Morgan (2R) and United States' forward Megan Rapinoe (R) celebrate a goal.

"I think we have to come out and play as hard as we possibly can in every single game". 13-0 isn't a fútbol score, it's a football score.

"Imagine it being you out there", she added.

Perhaps the harshest criticism of the USA came from Canadian analysts on TSN's World Cup show. Alongside Abby Wambach, she appeared on American Idol to announce that the season 14 victor would record the official song for Fox's coverage of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. But once you learn all the other factors that go into the athlete's pay, this "inequality" falls apart just like all the other gender "wage" gap claims. "We accept our mistakes and we are going to improve".

The USWNT was truly off to the races in the second half where the team scored nine goals, including four in a six minute span. Mewis opened the dam with a strike on the half-volley and was followed by goals from Morgan, Mewis again, and Lavelle.
