National Basketball Association star suing Nike over allegations of 'fraud'

The Toronto Raptors superstar has filed a lawsuit against Nike claiming he designed the logo that appeared on his Nike apparel, but the company copyrighted it without Leonard's consent.

Leonard is hoping to regain control of his logo to use it for clothing collections, sneakers, sports camps, and charity events, while New Balance - the company Kawhi signed with following his time at Jordan Brand - would seemingly also be permitted to utilize the graphic.

In the lawsuit, Leonard claims he traced his hand and drew his initials inside, along with his jersey number, 2.

Kawhi had a deal with Nike's Jordan brand when he first got drafted to the National Basketball Association which said that he "allowed Nike to use on certain merchandise the logo he created while Leonard continued to use the logo on non-Nike goods".

Leonard, who now plays for the Toronto Raptors of the National Basketball Association, said he first designed his logo, which "included elements that were meaningful and unique to him", in 2011.

Governor Andrew Cuomo arrived at the scene a short time ago and received a briefing from officials now addressing the situation. The New York City Fire Department is responding to a report of a helicopter crash at a building in midtown Manhattan.

Leonard demands exclusive rights over the use of the logo and further alleges that Nike had committed fraud. The Clippers' suspected motive was an attempt to gain Leonard's interest during his upcoming free agency, but it looks like the Raptors star and New Balance endorsee could be putting an end to any negotiations-and take back what he says is his.

Nike "explicitly has objected to such uses". Therefore any use of the logo moving forward should be decided by Leonard, the lawsuit stipulated.

Leonard claims he came up with logo and that the design is based on the outline of his own hands.

Leonard and the Raptors will face the Warriors for Game 3 of the Finals at Oakland's Oracle Arena on Wednesday night.
